Rings found with AT Pro in 2012

These are the year end total of rings found by my friend and fellow metal detector user up in Canada. He is one of the best I've ever seen or come across. There are 73 rings found with the AT series detectors, AT Pro and the new AT Gold. Most of these rings were found with the AT Pro as he just received the AT Gold just before the end of 2011.

Some of you might know him from the metal detector forums as he goes by John - Edmonton. This guy really knows how to use a Garrett detector and he has become quite proficient with the new AT Series. The higher frequency of these detectors allow it to hit jewelry targets harder and deeper.

The AT Pro operates at 15 Khz while the AT Gold operates at a high of 18Khz. And the AT Gold has a true all metal mode designed for prospecting for gold nuggets, and it will hit some tiny ones.

The AT Pro has grown a good following in the relic hunting crowd as well as the beach hunting fans due to it being totally water proof down to 10 feet depth and it handles salt water better than the AT Gold.

If you don't have an AT Series detector give one a test from your local metal detector dealer or just buy one and give it a go. You won't be disappointed.

First Use of the Garrett AT Pro

In the Fall of 2010, the company presented a new Garrett metal detector, which took quite a unique place in the line of metal detectors. Innovative new model was primarily the ability to use the detector in the water. However, it remained quite a full dirt detector. In January 2011 new product under the name of Garrett At-Pro appeared in Russia. AT - means "SUV" (AT - All Terrain), and Pro - means that there is a new special audio mode.

Today, the long-awaited parcel was delivered to me. Simply box in the classical style of Garret, convenient and compact. Open the box and nothing special except perhaps for headphones. The rest is the same Ace 250, only black and bigger.

The first thing that caught my eye - the headphone plug, it is the same as in underwater headphones. This means that the headphones can be used with this instrument, but it can be forgiven for the opportunity to work under water. I decided to compare them with friends over headphones Garrett DeLux or Master Sound. They were completely identical, even the length of stranded cable is the same, just different plug. Brining them under water is impossible, however. But you can connect special underwater headphones, such as models from Sea Hunter Mark II or Infinium LS.

The control unit has a jack for typical headphones plug and coil. These elements are used in specialized underwater metal detector, providing water resistance to a few tens of meters. Headphone jack has a special cap screwed in to keep the nest from getting foreign objects into it. It will be very convenient for those who are not going to use headphones. The nest of the coil has no cap, but it did not need it.

Trying to connect the coil, I immediately ran into a serious lack of construction. Control housing can not completely encircle the cable plug coil and plug your headphones. A twist to require some effort, so that all elements fit snugly together. You may need to use pliers. I would recommend to avoid frequent disconnection of the coil, ideally it would be better if you connect the coil once and will often not disassemble the detector.

It should be noted that all the elements very well lubricated with silicone. Buying a metal detector to search under water is very important to remember that the rubber components require regular lubrication with silicone. Building/construction silicone here does not fit, it should NOT be used for this purpose. You should be able to acquire specialized "pure silicone", it can be found in diving shops. If you do not lubricate with silicone the rubber elements will crack from dryness and lose elasticity as a result you will get a water leak in the control unit.

Test to a depth of...

At-Pro running at 15 kHz and the expected depth should not be prohibitive. It also showed the test in air. If we compare the Pro mode and standard mode about, then depth-wins standard mode. This can be explained by the fact that in the Pro mode with increasing depth of sound gradually decays and deep targets can be heard only through headphones already. I also noticed a feature that a small target, in the Pro mode gives a crackling, no clear signal. Test the air is always somewhat arbitrary.

A New User of the AT Pro Review

Normally I swing one of my Fisher detectors, the 1266 and CZ5 but decided to buy the AT Pro because I could not afford the cost of the CZ21 for water detecting. It was a good choice and I can tell that it will be one of my favorites!

The tones in pro mode are nice to my ear, light weight, deep machine in my dirt and all around a great metal detector. This detector offers the best of all worlds in my opinion and here is what I mean; I use the 1266 in the woods to hunt for relics from the Civil War Campaign of Andrew Jackson in the creeks here in Alabama. I got 12 musket balls today and a cuff button using the AT Pro!

One of the best features is the blunt tip and tail ends of the DD coil. I went out the last few days and found a few nice items at depth of 6-8" in the hard ground and 3 more musket balls and another cuff button, but when I metal detected only next to large tree bases the AT Pro performed outstandingly, the extended detection range beyond the end of the blunted coil tip provided a 1841 half dime at 2" and 9 more musket ball bullets!

In conclusion...my Fisher's might be gathering a bit of dust in the closet while I will be grabbing my Garrett AT Pro as my main metal detector from now on!

Garrett AT Pro Finds

Well folks the Garrett AT Pro continues to kick some butt in the Relic and Jewelry department. I have heard many reports by folks finding deep Relics in the South from previously hunted to death sites. The fact that the AT Pro is a high frequency detector and is pre-ground balanced at the factory PLUS having a fast track ground balance PLUS having this new 11x8.5" DD coil is adding to its uniqueness in finding hard to get artifacts.

The pre-ground balance is basically a discriminate mode with a ground balance system. And the new DD coil design with the blunted tip and tail make it as deep as a 12-13" concentric coil. Luckily the AT Pro is water proof and is finding itself quite a following at the beach for hitting gold jewelry in water and out.

Below are some pictures collected off the Garrett AT Pro forums from their users from the last few months. You will see the month listed on the pic of its month it showed up on the forums. I will just let the pictures do the talking now... Enjoy!
